Building a bridge of Peace and Understanding through Community Service

1.0 Introduction

College and University Student Assembly (CUSA) is an annual volunteer service award program that provides a platform for undergraduate students to exchange ideas and share best practices on volunteerism and culture of service.

The 1st CUSA was held in 2008 participated by 280 students from 10 universities and colleges. The program incorporates cognitive and experiential learning and received tremendous response from students. Several universities received awards for their outstanding community service programmes. (refer to Attachment for report of 1st CUSA 2008)

The 2nd College and University Student Assembly (CUSA) with the theme: “Building a Bridge of Peace and Understanding through Community Service” will be held on 14 – 16 August 2009 at the Universiti Utara Malaysia, Kedah.

Over 200 student leaders representing various student organizations from around the nation are expected to attend this premier national assembly which will showcase best practices on community service and innovative ideas of character building.

Several categories of awards including on community service, leadership and innovation will be conferred during CUSA to outstanding student organizations.

2.0 About Collegiate Ambassador for Peace (CAP)

CAP is part of a global network of student leaders representing the diversity of the human family. They stand on the common ground of shared principles and are committed to the path of promoting reconciliation, overcoming barriers, and building peace. The primary objective for the CAP initiative is first and foremost to create a caring community within the university compound. CAP appointees are encouraged to pursue personal excellence through challenging one’s limitations and to use their capacities for the greater good by promoting a life of service towards all aspects of life.

3.0 Objectives

  1. To inculcate the true spirit of Living for Others (volunteerism) and culture of service among our youths
  1. To recognize students involvement in community service by awarding outstanding service programmes.
  1. To facilitate cooperation and partnership in community service programmes among students to promote national unity.
  1. To provide experiential learning and leadership skills to develop our youths as responsible citizens for nation-building.
